The ATLAS Prize is presented annually by the Association for Tourism and Leisure Education and Research, which brings together academics and professionals from across the globe. This year's jury reviewed a total of 17 nominated theses: seven at bachelor’s level and ten at master’s level. They described the overall quality as high, noting that students had ‘clearly given thought to issues that matter’.

Diving deep into ocean literacy

Jolien's thesis, titled Divers, the eyes and voices of the ocean, explored the transformative potential of the diving industry in Curaçao. Her research focused on the question of how diving experiences can contribute to ocean literacy and a deeper sense of environmental stewardship among participants. Grounding her work in theories of transformative experience, behavioural change, and the ethics of care, Jolien employed a broad mix of research methods to gather and analyse her findings.

A passion that made an impression

The jury praised both the subject matter and the quality of the research, noting that the topic receives relatively little attention in academic literature and that the researcher's passion for the subject was evident throughout. They were particularly impressed by the way Jolien connected her findings to the theoretical framework, describing the analysis as ’really fascinating’ and ’engaging’. The thesis concluded with a series of recommendations that the jury rated as excellent.

Distinguished international company

The award was presented alongside recognition for graduates from Erasmus University Rotterdam, Munster Technology University, Amity University, and Sun Yat-sen University – placing Jolien and BUas in distinguished international company.

BUas warmly congratulates Jolien on this well-deserved recognition and is proud to see the quality of her work honoured at international level.
