Orphanage Tourism: From good intentions to responsible impact
08/25/2026 - 14:15
Orphanage tourism has emerged over the past two decades as one of the most contested intersections between hospitality, tourism, and child welfare. What often begins as a well-intentioned desire by travellers to “help vulnerable children” has, in many destinations, contributed to the growth of residential institutions that are neither necessary nor in the best interests of the child. The SIG Orphanage Tourism brings together researchers, educators, and practitioners to examine this paradox and to develop responsible alternatives that align tourism practice with children’s rights and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
